Sources & Attribution

Every piece of rules content in Data Dungeon is served via Open5e and comes from one of the open-licensed source documents listed below.

How to use these sources
New character: Pick sources up-front on the character creation wizard under "Content sources".
Existing character: Open the character sheet, go to the Overview tab, tap the pencil next to the name (or the "Edit Character" button), then find the "Content Sources" row near the bottom of the modal.
What this means at the table
This app is a D&D 5e sheet. The engine applies 5e rules (2014 SRD 5.1 or 2024 SRD 5.2 depending on your character's pinned ruleset). Content from other publishers is served in pickers, but their rule variations aren't applied automatically.
  • Advanced 5th Edition (A5E): uses 10-level exhaustion, Fortitude/Reflex/Will saves, and superiority-die maneuvers. Our engine uses 5e exhaustion and ability saves — A5E content plays mechanically as 5e.
  • Class-feature depth: SRD-12 classes get hand-authored Combat-tab modules (Rage, Action Surge, Hunter's Mark, etc.). Tome of Heroes classes appear as classes and track HP / saves / spell slots, but their features render as prose on the Features tab — no bespoke counters.
  • Duplicate spells / items across sources: Fireball is in SRD 2014, SRD 2024, and at least one third-party source. Pickers dedupe by name and pick the version that matches your character's ruleset; other versions surface as "also in" badges on the same card.
  • Species mechanics aren't enforced. A 2014 Elf's +2 DEX vs. a 2024 Elf's background ASI is yours to apply on the ability-score step. The app stores species as a name, not as a bundle of bonuses.
  • Community-contributed sources ("Spells That Don't Suck", "Elderberry Inn Icons") are less rigorously edited than SRD / Kobold Press / EN Publishing content. Review before adopting at a serious table.
DMs can restrict a whole campaign to specific sources (data model ready; dashboard toggle is a near-term follow-up).

SRD 2014 + SRD 2024 are the baseline for every character — you can't turn those off (they're what WotC opened under the licenses). Other sources are opt-in per character so strict tables stay strict and extended-content tables get the full catalogue. DMs can further restrict allowed sources at the campaign level.

Content is used under the terms of each document's respective license (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 / Creative Commons 0 / OGL 1.0a). Data Dungeon is not affiliated with any of the publishers below; the licenses permit redistribution with attribution, which is the purpose of this page.
